  • Q: What is this website?
A: This website is part of a research study, so only members of the study will be issued an account.
  • Q: I don't have a password. How do I get one?
A: This website is part of a research study, so only members of the study will be issued an account. You will be given a password at your randomization visit.
  • Q: I’ve forgotten my Study ID/password!
A: You can go to I forgot my password and we will automatically send your password or please contact Brittany Olesen, at bolesen@health.ucsd.edu for assistance.
  • Q: Why does it take so long to connect to the site or navigate within the site?
A: There are several reasons why this may happen.

    (1) The first thing to try is to close any unnecessary programs you are operating that are not associated with this site. Graphic programs, music programs, or fancy backgrounds can sometimes keep your computer too busy to do what you need it to do.

    (2) If you are using a dial up modem, this may delay your connection to websites. A cable modem or ADSL is much faster, but more expensive and not available in every area. Another option is to use a computer at work, school, or in a public library, where the network connections are often much faster.

    (3) If you are running on an older operating system, or not using the most current software. For best results on this website, we suggest using either Internet Explorer 9 or above, Google Chrome 58 or above, or Mozilla Firefox 53 or above or Apple Safari 10. See below for instructions on "How do I know what web browser I am using?"

    (4) Sometimes adding more memory to an older computer will make it operate faster. If the machine has less than 4 gigabytes of memory, you might consider upgrading the memory. Please consult a computer store or a friend with some computer experience before making your final decision.

    (5) Sometimes technical problems on the website cause it to operate slowly. If you find that other websites such as CNN or the New York Times are operating quickly while the this site is very slow, the problem may be on our end. If the slowness continues for several hours, please let us know.

  • Q: I type my Study ID and password and press Submit, but I get an error message: “Problem with Study I.D. or password. Please retry.”
A: You may see this message because your ID or Password Studio are not written exactly. Please check your ID and password carefully . If you have lost your ID or Password Studio, go to the page I forgot my password and send you another email.

If you are still receiving this error message, it is likely your account was disabled, or there may be other problems which require assistance from our staff. Please contact Brittany Olesen at bolesen@health.ucsd.edu.
  • Q: I type my Study ID and password correctly and press “Submit”, but then I just get the same login screen again (“Please log in.”)
A: This can happen when your web browser does not allow web cookies. Please see the question "How do I enable cookies in my browser?" below.
  • Q: What is a web cookie?
A: A cookie is a funny name for a small piece of information that a web site stores on your computer. Each time you log in, the site creates a cookie file that proves that you typed the password correctly. Each time you click on a new page, your computer uses the cookie information so that the web site knows that you're allowed to be there. The cookie is destroyed when you close the web browser. It's a lot like getting a ticket for a concert that proves that you paid for admission. If you don't keep the ticket/cookie, we can't tell if you're allowed to go in or not.

Basically, this site depends on cookies for the login screen to work. If cookies are disabled you cannot log in.

  • Q: Does my web browser support cookies or not? How can I be sure?
R: To see if your browser allows cookies, please try the Cookie Test.
  • Q: How do I know what web browser I am using?
A: The most common web browsers are Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and Google Chrome. It's easy to see which one you are using by looking up at the top of the window. It says either "Site name - Microsoft Internet Explorer" or "Sit name - Google Chrome." To see which version of the browser you have, click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer or About Chrome (whichever it is). The About screen will tell the exact version number.
  • Q: How do I enable cookies in my browser?
A: This depends on what browser you are using. We have provided instructions for the most common browsers, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Dafari. You can refer to the question above for how to know which browser you have, then follow the instructions specific to your software.

    Instructions for Internet Explorer

Click the Tools menu, select Internet Options, and choose the "Privacy" tab. There is a vertical sliding bar that controls the privacy level for web sites. The website works with the default security setting of Medium. Increasing the security level to High or Block All Cookies will prevent the browser from accepting cookies, and therefore prevent you from using the website. After changing your security settings, close all browser windows and then start Internet Explorer again. You can check your settings with the Cookie Test.

    Instructions for Mozilla Firefox

Click the Tools menu, select Options..., and choose the "Privacy" tab. With Firefox, select "Firefox will: Remember History". With older versions or with custom settings, check Accept cookies from sites, check Accept third-party cookies, and select keep until expired. After changing your security settings, close all browser windows and then start Internet Explorer again. You can check your settings with the Cookie Test.

  • Q: My email address has changed. How can I update it?
A: Sorry, you cannot change that information online on your own. Please contact us at 619-416-1499 with your new information.
  • Q: I started the study over six months ago and finished my final (six month) questionnaire a few weeks ago. Now I can't get into the site anymore. Why?
A: Study participants can use the web site until 60 days after their last questionnaire is due. Afterward, their study ID expires and they cannot log in anymore.
  • Q: My question is not mentioned here, and I still need help. What can I do?
R: During business hours (Monday to Friday, 9-5) you can contact Brittany Olesen at and 619-416-1499. Or, you can send an email at any time to bolesen@health.ucsd.edu. We'll try to get back to you within 24-48 business hours.
